Dillon Banerjee: So You Want to Join the Peace Corps: What to Know Before You Go
Read it once when I was considering joining, then again once I had accepted an assignment. Pretty good advice in both situations.
Hilary Liftin and Kate Montgomery: Dear Exile
This book was well written and gives a perspective of the Peace Corps from both a volunteer in Kenya and a friend back home. It is, however, depressing as all get out.
Jason Carter: Power Lines
Grandson of Jimmy Carter writes about his service in post-apartheid South Africa. Very readable.
Mike Tidwell: The Ponds of Kalambayi
Written by an aquaculture volunteer in Zaire. A bit dated (1990) but still an interesting read.
Sarah Erdman: Nine Hills to Nambonkaha
Great Peace Corps memoir about her service as a health volunteer in Cote d'Ivoire. My fave so far.
I am going to miss you, Kiersten, my little friend whom I never really met. I have enjoyed the journey that I have vicariously traveled with you via this blog. When I was lonesome for Marie and she would not post or write, I always knew that I could come to your blog for a bit of info and oftentimes a laugh or two. I was never disappointed; but, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I hope that we will some day meet, for I feel as if I know you. Thank you for taking care of my daughter these past months. You have been a tremendous friend and companion to her, and I appreciate that immensely. I have a feeling that whatever you do in the future, wherever life takes you, you will have an abundance of friends who love and respect you. Continue giving...sharing...being the lovely young woman you are. Again, it has been a pleasure and I am sorry that it is coming to an end. Thank you.
