Hey all. This is Sara D., one of Kiers's good friends and old roomies. I've discovered a fabulous way to connect with Kierstin on about a monthly basis. I simply call her.
Here's how it works. A company called ALOSmart.com has numerous online international phone cards. The one with the best rate for a Senegalese cell phone (which Kierstin has) is called ALO Express. To buy it, simply go to www.alosmart.com/Senegal-Cellular-calling-card-380.asp. They come in $5, $10 and $20 denominations. If you are a first time buyer, the company will call you to verify you have actually ordered the card (really cool security feature), and then they will email you an access number and your passcode. After your first purchase, they will just send you an email right away. You can use the access number from any phone - land line or cellular - and will only get charged regular minute deductions/fees as the numbers is 1-800.
With $10, I have been able to talk to Kiers for 40-60 minutes. Don't ask me why it varies, but it does. Also, the best part is the connection is AMAZING. There is no sound delay as we are both talking cell-phone to cell-phone. DC to the depths of Africa with crysal clear sound for about $10/hr? Seriously, you can't ask for much better than that.
So, if you don't have Kiers's number, ask her for it and give her a call. It will make her week. I promise. And there is nothing like hearing her voice to feel how she's really doing...
Good luck,
Sara
